Jimmy Johnson does 6 championships make you a legend commercial
I'm 57 years old and have been a Nascar fan most of my life. I attended my first race at Rockingham at the age of 14. The only time in all those years i stopped watchin Nascar was after Jimmy won his second championship. I'm sure most fans remember the numerous times that team was fined for cheating even to the point of suspending the crew chief from races during those seasons. But for some reason Nascar still let them win those championships. I only started back watchin Nascar this year after Brad won last year. So i didn't see Jimmys last three Cup season wins but he's had trouble with cars passing inspection this year so i'll bet he did then to. Today for the first time I saw the Jimmy Johnson legend commercial comparing him to Richard Petty And Dale E. sr. He walked past them like they were yesterdays news showing no respect but only a contempt look of " i'm better than you " on his face as he looked each of them in the eye. Jimmy is a legend alright. That team has the honor of being the cheatinest team in Nascars modern day. Jimmy should have kneeled down before Petty and it's not even possible to compare Jimmy to Dale in any way. How could Nascar do this to the two drivers who did more than anyone to make racing the big time sport it has become. I hope the idiots at Nascar that came up with that stupid commercial realize what they've done and remove it from the air waves. I will not watch another race until they do.
I agree that Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty are the 2 greatest NASCAR drivers in each of their respective era or rein in NASCAR.
From 1964-1981 Richard Petty was the best driver having won 7 NASCAR Championships. With over 200 victories, he won more races, started more races and made more money than any stock-car driver in history.
From 1979-1994 Dale Earnhardt was the best driver having won 7 NASCAR Winston Cup Championships and (18) top 10 finishes over his 20-year career.
Jimmie Johnson is the best driver is NASCAR today. So far in his 12-year career he's won (5) Sprint Cup Series Championships and is going for his 6th.
Should Jimmie Johnson win his 6th and 7th I would and many other folks would certainly include him along side Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the 3 greatest NASCAR drivers.
As far as Jimmie Johnson and the #48 team "cheating", anyone who thinks for one second that Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, their respective race chiefs and race teams didn't try to get every advantage, every edge, pushing the bounds & limits of NASCAR rules & spec's over their competition has to either be naive and/or doesn't remember incidents in the past. Remember Oct 9, 1983, at Charlotte when Richard Petty won and NASCAR inspectors found 2 cheats: 1st, his crew had put left-side tires on the right side & vice-versa. The 2nd cheat, a much bigger advantage: Petty's engine measured 381.983 cubic inches, compared to the legal 358. Petty was allowed to keep the win, but was fined. Do you think NASCAR these days would allow JJ, or anyone caught cheating keep a win, NOT!
As for the commercial, JJ is only driver close to 7 NASCAR Championships that could be included in a commercial featuring the Richard Petty & Dale Earnhardt. And whose to say the JJ's look wasn't a look of "I hope to join" Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt in the elite club of 7 NASCAR Championships
Great points Robert. I was not a Dale Sr. fan and have grown very weary of the selective memory of his fans. I respected him as one of the greatest race car drivers ever, and an extremely smart business man. However, the fans who want to paint his picture wearing a halo need to wake up and face reality. ALL race car drivers push the envelope if they want to be competitive. I would think that the fact that the 48 was able to win championships after the penalties that they faced a couple of those years should speak to the talent of the entire organization. As for the driver, Jimmie Johnson is one of the faces of NASCAR. He is articulate, professional, and a great ambassador for the sport.
I guess I should have included in my original post that it was aimed solely at Nascar. I realize this a forum and everyone is entitled there opinion but that was not my intention. I didn't say that Petty or Dale had never cheated. I only made the accurate statement that the 48 team is the cheatinest team in Nascars modern day. I was sitting in the stands the day that Petty ran wrong side tires. And I still think what Dale did to Terry Labonte, (who at the time was his best fishing buddy) was about the lowest form of sportsmanship I've ever seen. I have never pulled for either Petty or Dale as drivers. Living in the same state as them I have met both of them personally and never asked for a autograph. So as you can see my memory is not selective. Some may not understand that when Petty won his titles there were only maybe 5 or 6 teams who could expect to actually win the championship. So yes it was easier for him to win titles but did he win 5 in a row when it was easy to do....No. When Dale did it there may have been 10 or so teams capable of winning the cup. Did he win 5 in a row then....No. These days you have 15 plus teams who are capable of winning the title. The reason why they didn't is because it was impossible then and even more so now.......unless you are really good at cheating. My intention here was to give my opinion that Nascar should not be dragging down the legacy of Nascars two greatest drivers by trying to raise Jimmy up to there level.. My last post on the matter..........
Joseph, if you think that Petty and E. Sr. didn't do the same thing, then you are naive. Maybe you should watch something else.
I'm amazed at the people that claim Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. were these spectacular racers and ALWAYS did things right. BULL S.. It's like someone posted, Petty was found cheating many times but because he virtually represented NASCAR he got away with it. Dale Earnhardt Sr. on the other hand, was a dirty racer. Use your brain, why do you think he was called "THE INTIMIDATOR". He wouldn't think twice about turning somebody to pass them even if it meant putting somebody in the wall. Hold on....remember back in the day of Earnhardt Sr., the champion from the previous year AUTOMATICALLY GOT PIT BOX #1 FOR THE ENTIRE RACE SEASON. Now, the fastest qualifier for each race gets first choice of pit box. You think that doesn't make a difference? Who in the hell cheated more than Junior Johnson? Yes folks, like him or not, Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus have earned everything the 48 team has accomplished. Jimmie NEVER complains about what may have happened in a race. He never trashes anybody. That's what I really and truly respect about the 48 team. Jimmie's last 4 races were terrible. Has he said anything bad about them - NO. Yes, he is the best driver in NASCAR now.
if not for the CHASE, he MIGHT have one that he really deserved.
ANTONIO L SAYS Yes folks, like him or not, Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus have earned everything the 48 team has accomplished. Jimmie NEVER complains about what may have happened in a race. Are you serious, you just trashed several other teams for cheating and neglected to mention that Chad and Jimmy have been caught cheating and suspended more than anyone over the last several years.
Without the chase Jimmy would not have 5 championships in a row, there should be an asterisk behind all of them that say Champion in the Chase era, the same as all the championships in the CHASE ERA.
agee 100% Bruce, and I have been a Gordon/ Hendricks Fan forever!!
Robert P Puleeese! If you look at the winner of the Datona 500 in 2006 you will see the name "Jimmie Johnson". After the race NASCAR found that Chad Knaus had cheated by illegally modifying the car with a device in the back windshield to change the shape of the car during the race, making it more aerodynamic. Jimmie won the Daytona 500 because of that illegal device and the team was fined the points it earned and Chad was suspended. Did I mention Jimmie Johnson is still the official winner of that race? Starting with the first NASCAR race (the winner cheated to win), Bill France decided that no race fan would see someone win a NASCAR race only to read about the winner being disqualified the next day for cheating. It's a policy NASCAR has upheld to this day.
Bending the rules will only get you so far; you still have to drive the car. Imagin racing to a win with Dale or Jimmy behind you. Which one would you prefer? The Intimidater? I think not. Gads it was fun watching that 3 car though. I miss Dale very much.
Jimmie is not Dale, but he is very good. Geff flat out beat Dale when Dale was good. Without Gordon Earnhardt would have had eight or nine cups; Wonder Boy.
I think Geff's personal life got in the way. He married a POS. Dale was always a POS. It looks like Jimmie may be a winner there too. Time will tell.
I missed the Petty era. :(
Jimmie Johnson is NOT the best driver in nascar today. PLEASE Jeff Gordon, Bush brothers and Tony Steward can out drive him any day!!!!!
Folks pay attention to the commercial it said 6 championships add to the legacy but is it enough to make you the the best driver or the best of the generation. It never said he was the greatest but we all know he is on his way cause even Petty and Earnhardt didn't do what he did 5 in a row and if Jimmie reaches 7 then but there are great drivers than never won championships -Mark Martin and does he deserve respect YES YES YES
Nothing today makes you a legend, that is decided after the driver has finished his work in NASCAR, I cannot imagine JJ not being seen as a legend. I do not pull for him, just to let you know. However, during the last 7 years, of watching drivers lead races and know that JJ is pursuing them, they seem to be afraid. I have seen JJ close in on a leader like a jaguar after prey. I have seen him set up a race leader in so many ways, then pass them without putting them in the wall. This is where I think he is legendary. When Dale Sr. set up the same fear in a driver, in front of him, he did it differently. He was old school, move or I move you. After the race, he would say, I didn't mean to spin him out. Dale is legendary for that. His peers knew that and his fans loved it, If he were a rookie driver today, using those tactics, he would be black balled by drivers, just like Montoya, and he would not have had that many championships. However, he would still have a huge fan base. Fans are appreciative of old school racing. It is a "racing thing" as drivers put it so eloquently. "5 time" is not my driver, Dale Sr. was not either but they both deserve their place in the annals of Nascar legends. Richard Petty is the King and he was in a different era where teams could be more creative in how they would prepare a car for a race. That time has sadly ended. The cars are now so closely matched that it is hard to pass another driver if he or she, is halfway experienced. We now have to look at 3 second differences in pit stops, RESTARTS of all things, fuel and tire strategy and cheating to often determine the outcome of a race. I will keep watching Nascar as it is my favorite sport. I hope drivers like JJ continue to rise to the top. We need heroes and villains.
Jimmie who? 5 what? when? Is this a history lesson? He's third place, behind two drivers that will beat him this year.
Nascar will never be the same as when it was Winston Cup. I understand that Johnson would only have TWO championships under the old system. Bring it back and may the best racer who races all 36 races win the championship. Johnson is talented, but would he be even close to having 5 championships if he was with a under funded team and under the old system
It's nice to see that some things never change around here. People still trying to compare drivers from different eras. This is impossible to do in any sport. The thing that I always see in these comparisons is that the drivers of today not being able to be competitive with the drivers from the "good old days". Who's to say that the greats from the past would be competitive against the 48 team in today's format. But as I said the whole idea of these comparisons is a waste of time. Jmo.
I think some people's "Bromance" for The King and The Intimidator makes them miss the point of the commercial.
I'm not a "5-Time" or Hedrick fan, but truth is the commercial is spot on. Using the two greatest drivers of the last two generations makes perfect sense.
These symbolism in the commercial is that the two iconic figues seen in this commercial are "history itself" watching Johnson.
Who better to sit in judgement over JJ's career that the greatest racers of all time?
If someone could go back over his last five championships add up the points and see if he finishes #1. There is no comparison between the three, Dale and the King had to fight the entire season to win their championships, not hang around in the top 12 and get a second chance. Call it new era but don't compare. Even if he wins 8 he will never be as great as Richard and Dale.
Antonio L. You asked "Who in the hell cheated more than Junior Johnson?" If you want to know look on google for "NASCAR's biggest cheaters". Then select the first choice that comes up. Please respond on this forum and tell everyone whose picture you see.
